Book Of The Month – May 2025

This month’s selections celebrate imagination, resilience, and the joy of discovering new worlds — whether through books, quirky hotels full of animals, or life on a remote island. For each age group, we’ve chosen a story that will spark curiosity, encourage empathy, and show that there’s more than one way to explore the world — with your eyes wide open, your heart engaged, and your imagination in full swing.

For ages 3–6:

I Can Read With My Eyes Shut! by Dr. Seuss

This book is packed with Dr. Seuss’s trademark rhymes, humour, and quirky illustrations — perfect for young children just discovering the joy of reading.

Unlike traditional early readers, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut! offers a playful, hands-on experience. Children don’t just follow the story — they interact with it, flipping the book in different directions to follow upside-down or circular text. It’s a book that turns reading into a game, encouraging effort without ever feeling like work.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Dr. Seuss, from “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!”

For ages 6–8:

Hotel Flamingo by Alex Milway

When young Anna inherits a run-down hotel, she’s determined to bring it back to life — even if it’s full of quirky animal guests and more than a few surprises. This joyful chapter book is full of heart, humour, and charming illustrations, perfect for children gaining confidence in independent reading. The uplifting themes of teamwork, determination, and kindness make it a lovely choice for this age.

For ages 8-12:

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

This unique and beautifully illustrated novel tells the story of Roz, a robot who finds herself alone on a remote island and must learn to survive in the wild. As she observes and adapts to the natural world, she forms unexpected bonds with animals and discovers what it means to belong. A thoughtful, tender story about nature, identity, and compassion.

Whether your child is just discovering the joy of turning pages, beginning to read independently, or diving into longer stories, this month’s choices are designed to inspire. From silly rhymes to animal adventures and robot resilience, each book offers something special — and might just become a new favourite.
