If your children enjoyed making sock puppets, they’ll love this craft project too! Glove puppets offer even more opportunities for creativity, as each finger can become a different character or feature. Whether you’re making an animal, a person, or a fantastical creature, glove puppets are a great way to spark imaginative play. Best of all, you probably already have everything you need at home!
What You’ll Need:
- An old glove (preferably cotton or fleece)
- Felt or fabric scraps
- Wool or yarn for hair
- Googly eyes or buttons
- Needle and thread or fabric glue
- Scissors
Instructions:
- Choose a Theme – Decide what your glove puppet will be. Each finger can be a separate character, or you can make one main puppet using the whole glove.
- Decorate the Fingers – If you are making multiple characters, attach small felt pieces or buttons to bring each finger to life. If you are creating a single puppet, add facial features to one side of the glove.
- Add Hair or Ears – Glue or sew on yarn for hair or felt pieces for ears.
- Make a Face – Use googly eyes, buttons, or felt shapes for the eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Secure All Features – Allow any glue to dry or stitch details in place for a more durable puppet.
- Put on a Puppet Show! – Slip your hand into the glove and bring your new puppet to life with different voices and movements.
Glove puppets are perfect for storytelling, role-playing, or simply having a giggle.
Here is a sweet little story that is perfect for a glove puppet with five different characters with each character playing a role. You and your child can bring it to life with your new glove puppet—whether you act it out together or let them put on a show for their friends!
The Lost Little Hedgehog
Characters:
- Hugo the Hedgehog (main character, thumb)
- Molly the Mouse (index finger)
- Ollie the Owl (middle finger)
- Benny the Bunny (ring finger)
- Grandpa Tortoise (pinky finger)
Story:
One autumn evening, little Hugo the Hedgehog woke up from his nap and went for a walk. After a while he realised that he had wandered too far from his cosy nest. He was lost in the big forest!
As he sniffed around, he met Molly the Mouse.
“Molly, can you help me find my way home?” Hugo asked.
“I’d love to, but I’m too small to see where to go. Let’s ask Ollie the Owl!”
Ollie the Owl, perched high in a tree, hooted wisely.
“I can see the whole forest from up here. Your home is near the big oak tree! But be careful—the path is tricky. Maybe Benny the Bunny can help?”
Benny the Bunny, always full of energy, hopped over.
“Follow me! I know a quick way!” But Benny’s way was too quick—Hugo’s little legs couldn’t keep up!
Finally, they met Grandpa Tortoise, who smiled kindly.
“Slow and steady, little one. I will walk with you.”
Hugo followed Grandpa Tortoise step by step, and soon he spotted his cosy nest under the big oak tree.
“I’m home! Thank you, everyone!”
That night, Hugo curled up in his soft leaves, dreaming of his adventure and the wonderful friends who had helped him along the way.
